Alan Cowie

Alan Cowie

Alan was brought up in the once railway town of Shildon in County Durham, failing the 11 plus with honours and moving on to a secondary school that was pulled down just before he left.

Alan then went to Scorton Grammar School in North Yorkshire, passing the entrance exam by convincing the examiners that he was was good at cricket, (his Dad said that would be a good tactic as they had a rubbish team), although his passion was football, but Alan managed to get a place.

Unfortunately Alans father died while he was at school. He left, but his twin brother stayed on to take his A levels. This school was also, in part, pulled down and re-developed.

Alan then started to serve his articles at £1 a week to become a Chartered Surveyor in Bishop Auckland, but he knew that a long distance learning course would never get him qualified, so he left and went to Bristol and qualified to become a Chartered Building Surveyor.

After joining a local authority’s Architectural Department, and then a firm of General Practice Surveyors, Alan developed a large, multi disciplinary practice with a close friend and the practice became known as Peter Fall Cowie. He moved on from this practice after approximately 27 years, wanting to develop something new, interesting, hands on and fun.

Amongst all of that Alan met his wife Jenny and they were the last couple to be married in the Methodist Church in Shildon before once again it was pulled down.

Alan has been married 37 years, has three fantastic children, two dogs, six hens, a live in mouse that they can’t catch, and a battered MF 35 tractor.
