Defective Buildings
A building defects seminar, which drew in candidates from all over the north, proved a huge success as a first time venture between the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Darlington college.
The "brainchild" of Hunter Cowie, chartered building surveyors, Darlington, who presented the seminar, were thrilled with the response.
Alan Cowie, director of Hunter Cowie, said, "There was no doubt that the venue was an attraction and the subject, dealing with in vogue property problems that often affect the purchase or funding of property was of real interest".
Another first was an onsite visit to give practical, hands on experience in describing and identifying structural problems, damp, worm, timber decay and failure of materials by actually seeing the problems in situ.
"We will be following on with further seminars", said Mr. Cowie, "for what was a very well received first attempt for Darlington".
Free preventative maintenance fact sheets for property owners
Darlington based Chartered Building Surveyors Hunter Cowie have today announced that they are now providing FREE preventative maintenance fact sheet packs to property owners.
Over the duration of the last two months, Great Britain has been hit by adverse weather conditions, which is set to become a permanent trend over the winter periods. This has led to a dramatic increase in the number of properties experiencing flood damage caused by various issues, some of which could have been prevented by taking the necessary home protection steps.
Hunter Cowie Board Director Alan Cowie stated "With the economy in its current state, flooding in your property is the last thing that you need. By simply spending a little you can save a lot. Over recent weeks this statement has been underlined by the number of homes which have suffered from water damage. As a result we are now offering free electronic fact sheets to advise people on the necessary steps to take to protect their property and resolve any issues that they might have."
By taking only a few preventative measures, it can help cut your home insurance premiums considerably, in addition to your excess. By looking at all areas of your home you can potentially reduce the risk of flood damage.
In most cases you are entitled to independent representation instead of leaving it in the hands of the insurers loss adjuster.
To receive your FREE property fact sheet pack, please send an email to info@huntercowie.com and the fact sheets will be returned electronically. The 13 Chapter fact sheet pack includes information on all items relating to property surveying, from a glossary of building terms to saving money with preventative maintenance.
Infestation discovered
Hunter Cowie today surveyed a residential property and found a strong case of woodboring beetle infestation, most likely to be the common house furniture beetle.
The surveyor followed the "trail of suspicion" when he noticed a slight give to one area of the timber floor, discovering this severe infestation. Extensive and costly repairs will now be required to all ground floor timbers.
Luckily our clients are now well aware of the hidden costs that they could have faced.
For more information on Woodworm, beetle infestation and dry rot, please contact us by email (info@huntercowie.com) to receive your free fact sheet pack. If you are concerned about a similar problem or anything else in relation to your property, please contact the Hunter Cowie team to arrange a survey.
